Donald Darst was born in Kentucky growing up in Louisville and its rural suburbs. He now lives in Grey Forest, Texas with his wife, Linda, who is a potter and rug hooker, his two cats, and his Jack Russell, Sophi.
He is particularly inspired by the work of Russel Chatham, George Inness, and the Hudson River School. He has studied with artists he greatly admires such as Michael Albrechtson, Nancy Bush, Robert Johnson, Bill Schiedt and Michael Workman.

His art is in homes and businesses throughout the United States.
